# Moving Off Cisco Business Edition

January 15, 20253 min readCloud Calling

Almost nobody moves off a small on-premises calling appliance because of something the cloud platform does. They move because a date arrived.

Three dates govern an appliance and they sit years apart: the last day it can be bought, the last day a support contract can be renewed, and the last day it is supported at all. The middle date is the one that usually forces a budget request, because once renewal closes the platform keeps running while the risk position has changed. That is where most [collaboration and unified communications](https://trybussolutions.com/collaboration-unified-communications/) conversations start. A feature nobody has today is rarely what starts them.

On Business Edition today?

Business Edition estates carry licensing and hardware assumptions that do not translate directly to cloud calling. Confirming those early avoids a surprise at renewal.

An appliance bundles call control, voicemail and the edge services that let people work from outside the office onto hardware you own, patch and eventually replace. A cloud platform separates those. It is worth being specific about which parts you stop owning and which parts you give up, because the second list is shorter than most people fear and more awkward than a proposal usually admits.

## What you stop running

- **Call control and voicemail as servers.** Patching, backups, certificate renewals, and upgrade windows scheduled at night and repeated for each application in the bundle.
- **The edge for remote users.** Working from outside the office becomes a property of the service rather than a pair of servers you maintain.
- **The refresh cycle.** The appliance generation you are on has a last date of support. So will the next one you buy.

## What you give up

- **Local survivability as a default.** An on-premises system keeps a site talking to itself when the circuit fails. In the cloud that becomes a deliberate design item, with hardware at the site and a cost attached.
- **Features that have no cloud equivalent.** Billing and authorization codes entered at the handset, least-cost routing between sites, on-premises conferencing resources and some call-handling behaviors do not carry across. Each one needs an answer before you sign.
- **Direct control of the dial plan.** Changes are made through an administration portal, within the options the provider offers. Most teams find that acceptable. Teams with routing that grew organically over many years find it constraining.
None of the gains demonstrates well. There is no screen in a demonstration that shows the cluster you no longer patch, which is why this decision is hard to justify from a feature comparison and straightforward to justify from a renewal quote. What decides the scope is your own estate: the analog circuits in [the inventory almost nobody has](https://trybussolutions.com/analog-endpoints-cloud-calling-migration/), the integrations nobody has confirmed yet, and any site that cannot lose dial tone. The shape of the project is in [what a migration off on-premises call control involves](https://trybussolutions.com/cucm-to-webex-calling-migration/), and the order that work runs in is in [the migration sequence](https://trybussolutions.com/cloud-calling-migration/).
