# Windows 10 End of Support in Meeting Rooms

> Extended Security Updates buy your desktops three years. They buy your meeting rooms nothing, and the Teams Rooms deadline passed in October 2025.

Where Windows 10 end of support was answered with Extended Security Updates, that was a reasonable answer for the desktop estate. It does nothing for the rooms.

Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. On the same date it ended support for Teams Rooms on Windows 10, and its wording leaves no interpretation room: devices "will no longer receive security and feature updates and Teams Rooms and Teams Rooms Pro Management will no longer update, support, or test Teams Rooms apps on Windows 10." An ESU subscription does not reverse that. It is an operating system program, and the room application went out of support on its own terms.

If rooms in your estate are still running on Windows 10 and nobody has raised them, that is the gap to close.

## The Dates, in One Table

The three ESU year-end dates are published in the Extended Security Updates lifecycle FAQ, not on the Windows 10 ESU overview page, which states only that enrolled commercial devices can receive updates for a maximum of three years. Both are in the sources below.

ESU qualifies the Enterprise, Education and Pro editions in commercial use, and the device has to be running Windows 10 version 22H2 with the required cumulative update installed. Three years, then it stops.

## The LTSC Answer Fails Twice

This is the part that sends room projects sideways, so it is worth being precise.

The usual response, once somebody points at a room PC, is that it runs a Long-Term Servicing Channel build and LTSC is supported into the 2030s. For a digital sign or a kiosk that reasoning holds. Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 has an extended end date of 14 January 2032.

For a meeting room running Teams Rooms it fails in two independent ways, and either one on its own is enough.

First, ESU does not apply to those builds. Microsoft's enablement documentation states that "Windows 10 Long Term Servicing releases (LTSB/LTSC) have their own lifecycles and are NOT covered via the Windows 10 ESU program." An LTSC room device is therefore not sitting inside the ESU arrangement the desktop team bought. It is on its own product lifecycle, which may be longer or shorter than assumed, and which nobody is tracking because the room was procured as a piece of furniture.

Second, and this is the one that ends the argument: Teams Rooms does not support LTSC at all. Microsoft's supported-versions list names Windows Enterprise LTSB and LTSC editions, and Windows IoT Enterprise LTSB and LTSC editions, among the editions that are not supported. The Teams desktop client carries the same exclusion, stating an operating system requirement of Windows 10 version 10.0.19041 or higher, "excluding Windows LTSC versions for Teams desktop app."

So a room built on LTSC to make it stable was never inside the supported configuration. Long-life servicing and a supported collaboration application are two different goals, and on this platform they do not combine.

## Windows 11 Is Not the Finish Line Either

The second surprise arrives after the upgrade project is declared finished.

Teams Rooms supports a narrow band of Windows 11 feature updates, and the band moves. On Microsoft's support table as read on 24 September 2026, 25H2 is supported and recommended, with an availability date of 3 August 2026, and requires Teams Rooms application version 5.6.210.0 or later. 24H2 is supported, available from 12 August 2025, and requires 5.3.205.0 or later. 23H2 and 22H2 are both listed as not supported.

Underneath that, the application has its own rule. Microsoft supports the most current release of Teams Rooms and the previous major release. Two versions. A room that has been offline, or whose management agent stopped reporting, falls out of the supported pair faster than anyone expects, and it does so quietly, because a room with a stale application still joins meetings until the day it does not.

The operational consequence belongs in the business case: a room estate is not a one-time upgrade. It needs the same update cadence and the same inventory discipline as the rest of the endpoint estate, and rooms are usually the part of the estate with no owner. ## Some Rooms Cannot Be Upgraded, and Those Are Purchases

Microsoft states that some certified Teams Rooms devices cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 and need to be replaced, and that those devices have been added to the end-of-service tab of its certified devices page. It directs customers to the device manufacturer for the specific models affected. That converts part of this from an IT task into a capital line, and the number of rooms in that category is the first figure your finance team will ask for.

Surface Hub is the case Microsoft documents in most detail. Windows 10 Team edition support on Surface Hub v1 and Surface Hub 2S ended on 14 October 2025, and Microsoft states that unlike the standard Windows 10 editions, Windows 10 Team has no extended support option beyond that date.

For Surface Hub 2S, Microsoft documents three migration paths: the Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, a USB installation of the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise recovery image carrying the Teams Rooms experience, and the Migration Launcher application. The third was available only until 14 December 2025, so a 2S left alone since then has two routes rather than three. For Surface Hub v1 the paths are replacement, or continued use as an external display receiving no updates and no support.

If the room estate came from a different manufacturer, the question transfers but the answer does not. Read that manufacturer's own lifecycle bulletin for the specific model and compute module, rather than assuming the room follows the desktop policy.

## What to Do, in Order

1. **Inventory the rooms as devices, not as rooms.** Model, compute module, operating system edition and build, Teams Rooms application version, and management enrollment. A spreadsheet built from the room booking list is not an inventory.
2. **Split the list three ways:** upgradeable in place, upgradeable with a compute module change, and replacement. The third column is the budget conversation, and the one with lead times attached.
3. **Check the supported Windows and application pairing** for every device you intend to keep, against the published support table rather than against what the device reports as working.
4. **Decide what happens to any room that stays on Windows 10 in the meantime**, including whether it is isolated from the rest of the network. 6. **Assign an owner for room updates afterward.** Without an owner, everything above repeats at the next feature update boundary.

## Where This Sits in the Wider Estate

## Common Questions

**We bought ESU. Are our rooms covered?** For the operating system, only if the device runs a qualifying edition on version 22H2 with the required cumulative update, and not if it runs LTSC or IoT LTSC. For Teams Rooms itself, no. Support for the application on Windows 10 ended on 14 October 2025 regardless of ESU.

**Do the rooms stop working on a particular date?** No. Nothing switches them off. They stop receiving updates, they stop being tested against new application releases, and they drift out of the supported configuration. The failure shows up as a room that cannot join, sign in or update, usually at the worst moment rather than on a scheduled date.

**Can we stay on Windows 10 and accept the risk?** You can, and some organizations will for a quarter or two while purchases are approved. Write down which rooms, until when, and what network controls apply to them in the meantime. The risk becomes a problem when it is nobody's decision.

**How long do replacements take to arrive?** Lead times vary by manufacturer and model, and we do not publish a figure we cannot stand behind for your specific bill of materials. Ask early, because the answer often sets the project timeline rather than the installation work.
